Music Class
ABOUT

A desire to make positive changes in music education where everyone, no matter their background, can access high quality music making.

What We Do

We offer creative, inclusive workshops that focus on exploring the music of musicians and composers of the global majority. This all culminates in a sharing event at the end for friends and family to see the great work the participants have created.

At the heart of all the work we do is our passion for creating positive change in our local communities through music making. Our workshops provide the opportunity for children and young people to see themselves represented in music they encounter, and know that their ideas are valuable to the world around them.

Motherland Music CIC was set up in 2019, when Amrit reflected on her own musical education and realised that she had never learnt about anyone of colour in her music education.

Upon researching more, she learnt that the contributions of musicians from the global majority are often overlooked in mainstream education, and so decided to create a space to combat the historical erasure of the contributions of these communities.

Our Aim

  • To create an open, and inclusive environment that allows workshop participants to explore and discover their creativity.

  • To increase the representation of musicians and composers of the global majority. â€‹â€‹

  • Make music more accessible to children and young people no matter their background.

We believe that all children have a right to access a well-rounded music education, where they can see themselves and their cultures represented.

We aim to provide workshops that are accessible, and truly nurture their creativity that leads to a feeling of empowerment, self-belief, and belonging.
